John Wesley Town of Bucyrus, KS passed away on Saturday May 14, 2016 at his home. He was born on June 17, 1926 in Somerset, KS to John S. Town and Minnie Cook-Town. John Graduated from Louisburg High School with the class of 1944.

After graduation he joined the United Stated Marine Corps in 1944. He served until 1946. While serving, John was stationed in the Pacific area, specifically Hiroshima, Iwo Jima, Nagasaki and Okinawa. He received the honors of Rifle Marksman, Sharpshooter, and the Good Conduct Medal. While serving, he was involved with demolition, explosives and mine detection/detonation.

After returning home, John began working for Mokan Dial in Louisburg, which began his career in communications with American Telephone and Telegraph (AT&T) in their Long Lines Division installing coaxial and telephone cables and constructing microwave towers. He later became an office manager for AT&T in KCMO and retired after 32 years of service in 1982. John was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.

John married Betty Henry, of Bucyrus, on April 19, 1952 at Queen of the Holy Rosary Church in Wea. They were married for 64 years. During their marriage they had 3 sons. He was blessed with 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Through life John enjoyed a lifetime of hunting, fishing, target shooting, playing cards and having good times with family and friends. He never knew a stranger as he would talk to anyone he met. He became good friends with several Kansas City Royals players and other major leaguers in the 70’s and 80’s. He enjoyed raising and training English Pointers, cutting and selling firewood with his family and friends, as well as raising and selling beef cattle. Throughout his life, he brought joy to many people and would always be there to offer a helping hand to whomever may need it.

John was preceded in death by his parents and his 6 brothers and sisters; Harold, Lester, Helen, Lois, Vivian and Vernon. He is survived by his wife Betty, sons; Wayne (Melinda) of Raymore, MO, Steve of Louisburg and Chris (Melissa) of Bucyrus. Four grandchildren; Ryan, Paden, Curtis and Autumn and two great-grandchildren; Addison and Tyler.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to be made to Holy Rosary Cemetery Fund or Good Shepherd Hospice
