Astrid E. Barkis, age 96, of Olathe, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday October 29, 2014 at Evergreen Community of Johnson County.

She was born on March 10, 1918, the daughter of Thomas Lowe and Laura (Conner) Whitaker. She was married on March 30, 1939 to Glenn Seiler. To this union two daughters, Elizabeth Ann and Dorothy Marie were born. She later married Marvin Barkis in Dec. 1967. He preceded her in death in 1978.

Astrid taught school for 20 years and taught Menniger Bible class for 8 years. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa Teachers Sorority and a member of the Louisburg First Baptist Church, serving as Sunday School Teacher, Youth Sponsor, and Luther Rice American Baptist Women’s president. She loved studying the Bible and enjoyed serving others in capacity of a care giving senior. Astrid loved cooking and entertaining for family and friends.

Survivors include her two daughters, Elizabeth (Dale) Crotchett, Olathe, KS; and Dorothy (Mark) Gardner, Louisburg, KS; two step children, Marvin (Kay) Barkis, Louisburg, KS and Marita (Dave)Barkis, Kansas City, MO; nine grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the First Baptist Church or to the Rutlader Outpost Cowboy Church.
